KAZNU WAS THE FIRST TO BE AWARDED THE QS "5 STARS" EXCELLENCE AMONG THE UNIVERSITIES OF THE COUNTRY

According to the results of an independent assessment carried out by the authoritative international rating agency Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), Al-Farabi Kazakh National University was highly assessed and became the first and only university in the Central Asian region to receive "Five stars" of Excellence in the international "QS Stars Rating System".

The audit conducted by the QS British company evaluates universities in four key groups, which include 12 subgroups, consisting of more than 50 indicators, reflecting a wide range of university activities and its compliance with high international standards. The universities participating in the audit are awarded from one to five stars for each subgroup, and then subsequently an overall rating score is derived. Based on the results of a comprehensive assessment of QS on indicators as training, employment opportunity, research, internationalization, services, art and culture, innovation, modern languages, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University ​ received the maximum "5 stars" score.

Assignment of the QS "Five stars" of Excellence means that Al-Farabi KazNU has a high international reputation and demonstrates leadership positions in the global scientific and educational space. The stars of excellence demonstrate the strengths of the university, highlighting the advantages and providing guidance to the partners, international experts in the field of education, both foreign and domestic applicants when choosing a university for education.

The QS Stars system provides an in-depth assessment with detailed descriptions and extensive data involvement. Such an audit allows the university to be assessed in a broader and more detailed way than in the framework of the annual ranking. Receiving the QS "Five stars", the university has gained another tool for promoting its educational programs and research, and therefore is increasing its competitiveness.

It is worth noting that there is no other university in Central Asia and Kazakhstan that has QS "Five Stars" except Al-Farabi KazNU. 

Only 62 universities of the world have QS "5 Stars", among them are Harvard University, Oxford University, Cambridge University, University of Chicago, Princeton University, Columbia University that are in the world top 5, top 10 and top 20 of the international global QS WUR ranking.

REMARKABLE PERFORMANCE OF KAZNU EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Al-Farabi Kazakh National University improved its performance and strengthened its position according to the results of the “QS World University Ranking by Subject 2021”, where more than 1,200 world universities are ranked in five different subject areas. Compared to last year, KazNU significantly improved its performance in the “Arts and Humanities”, going up from the 277^th to the 156^th place and in “Social Sciences and Management”, from the 351^st to 257^th place.

The specialty of “Modern Linguistics” of KazNU demonstrated excellent performance, by being placed on the 52^nd place among the best universities of the world. In particular, KazNU has shown its excellence in such specialties as “English Language and Literature” (top 101-150), “Linguistics” and “Law” (rank 151-200), “Economics and Econometrics” (rank 251-300), “Mathematics” (rank 301-350), “Physics and Astronomy” (rank 501-550).

For the first time, the specialties as “History” (top 151-200), “Business and Management” (rank 401-450), “Computer Science and Information Systems” (rank 501-550), and “Chemistry” (551-600) were ranked in this rating.

The methodology of the “QS World University Ranking by Subject” is based on four key indicators: academic reputation, reputation among employers, citation of scientific articles and the Hirsch Index. The rating is compiled on the outlook of more than 95 thousand educator-experts, 45 thousand employer-experts, as well as on the statistics from the Scopus database.

The educational programs of al-Farabi Kazakh National University in all these specialties occupy leading positions in the national rankings among Kazakhstani universities. On the path of transforming into a world-class research university, KazNU is successfully advancing both in the global and in the subject rankings of world universities. Thus, in 2020, according to the results of the global QS rating, the leading Kazakhstani university was ranked the 165^th in the list of the best world universities. Only Lomonosov Moscow State University and Al-Farabi Kazakh National University were included in this group from the universities of CIS countries.

KazNU moves forward in QS

According to the results of the «QS World University Ranking by Subject 2020» Al-Farabi KazNU has improved its performance and strengthened position.

In QS «WUR by Subject», more than 1200 universities of the world were ranked in five subject areas. Compared to last year, KazNU has significantly improved its performance in the specialty «Art and Humanities», moving forward from 339 to 277 place, and in «Social Sciences & Management» - 351 place.

In the specialty «Modern Linguistics», the University is in the top 51-100 of the best Universities in the world, top 201-250 in «Linguistics», and in «English Language & Literature» and «Law» is in the group 251-300. For the first time, the following specialties were included in this rating - «Mathematics» (top 351-400), «Economics & Econometrics» (451-500), and «Physics & Astronomy» (551-600).

The rating was compiled taking into account the opinions of more than 95 thousand teachers, 45 thousand employers, as well as data taken from the «Scopus» database.

It should be noted that KazNU, transforming into a world-class research University, is successfully advancing in world rankings. Thus, in 2019, according to the results of the global QS rating, the leading Kazakhstani University took the 207th place in the list of the best HEIs in the world. From the CIS countries, this group included only Lomonosov Moscow State University and Al-Farabi KazNU.

Al-Farabi KazNU Entered the top 210 Best Universities in the World

Al-Farabi KazNU is the only University in Central Asia to be listed in the top 210 among the world best HEIs by the international QS World University Rankings. Moving forward another 13 positions, it took the 207th place. Only two Universities in the post-Soviet space are included in this group - KazNU and Lomonosov Moscow State University (RF).

The QS is one of the most authoritative and influential international agency recognized by all countries, which for many years conducts a global ranking of the best institutions of higher education in the world. The first three places in the ranking are taken by Universities from the United States - Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford and Harvard Universities, respectively.

KazNU as the leading University in the country is purposefully working on the implementation of an important state task set by the First President of the country - Elbasy Nursultan Nazarbayev - to enter the top 200 best HEIs in the world. Over the past five years, the University has advanced in the QS WUR rating to more than 400 positions. In world practice, no University has achieved such growth dynamics! According to recommendations of the QS experts, KazNU's experience is studied by leading Universities of the world. This indicator is convincing evidence of its high competitiveness in the global education and science market.

It should be noted that according to the results of the subject rating «QS WUR by Subject» KazNU was the first among the Universities of the CIS countries to enter the group of 51-100 best HEIs in the world. In total, this rating includes six specialties of a leading Kazakhstani University.

Taking into account the growing role of KazNU in the global scientific and educational space, the QS decided to hold an international forum in Kazakhstan. The world-level event «Towards Excellence Based on the Harmony of Human Heritage and Advanced Technologies» will be held on the basis of Al-Farabi KazNU in September 2019. This is an indicator of high global prestige, not only of the University, but also the entire system of higher education in Kazakhstan.

KazNU demonstrates strong momentum in other reputable international rankings. Thus, according to a study by the British Agency «Times Higher Education», KazNU first among the Universities of Central Asia entered the list of the best HEIs in the world. In the global ranking of the most environmentally friendly HEIs «UI Green Metric Ranking of World Universities», it took 172 place, in the European rating of the European Scientific and Industrial Chamber, it received an «AA» rating and ranked among the leading European HEIs. According to a study of the famous international organization «Great Value Colleges» (USA), the University took 31 place among the technologically advanced Universities in the world.

An important factor in the successful promotion of KazNU in the ratings was a large-scale structural modernization, high efficiency of results-based management and the intensive development of a unique infrastructure, which over the past five years has grown by almost 50%.

The global recognition of the University is associated with expansion of international cooperation and the development of internationalization, as well as with an active work of KazNU as the Global Hub of the UN «Academic Impact» Program on Sustainable Development.

Al-Farabi KazNU became the leader among the universities of Kazakhstan in the prestigious European rating "Academic Ranking of World Universities-European Standard" ("ARES").
